Watching movies on the Internet is no longer a fantasy. The access to high speed Internet at anytime is now a given, the Internet becomes our favorite destination for shopping and entertainment.

On the Internet, imposing/forcing a consumption mode or replicating existing value chains is bound for failure. They are and will always be defined by the Internet users.

For movies on the Internet, the legal offer is very limited, expensive, not user friendly and intrudes on privacy. Naturally, a large number of Internet users turns toward the so called “illegal offering” to gain access to a larger title selection that can be found in high quality and that respects their privacy.

UbicMedia was founded with the strong belief that the Internet is a space for community and exchange in which documents must be able to move freely and where viewings are 100% controlled by their rights holders. That process has given birth to the new Internet Object called the “ Nomadic file” or “ PUM file”.


The PUM file
A PUM file can move freely on the Internet, but when it is played, a connection is automatically established with the rights holder. The viewing conditions that he has defined must be fulfilled wherever the PUM file may be located.

All the data related to Internet users actions on the reader are known, Internet users can either remain anonymous or be identified. Very valuable real time information about consumption modes is generated and can be monitored through a web control panel or through interfaces with third party CMS, CRM systems or Service delivery platforms.

The PUM file can be moved or hosted on non-secured infrastructures such as “clouds” and CDNs which can be very economical or even better on free Peer to Peer (P2P). The auto protected nature of the PUM file also makes it possible to exchange PUM files on a variety of physical media and devices such as memory cards, DVD (R), USB keys…


The PUMit System
The PUMit system is a technological solution based on the Internet architecture itself. It enables the establishment of a direct, totally secure business relationship between the rights holder and the Internet user through the PUM file which integrates a clearing process.
The PUMit system is using the MPEG-4 ISO file format and is composed of :
      . An online (SaaS) PUM file “fabrication” tool: PUMit Writer (8-10 times faster than realtime)
      . A reader : PUMit Reader
      . A « back office » tool for monitoring and management: PUMit system


The auto-protection of a PUM file is based on the progressive reading of a downloaded file and a streamed control file of less than 1% of the total file size. This makes it possible to benefit from the combined advantages of downloading and streaming even in low bandwidth environments.

The PUMit system enables :
      . A maximal content dissemination at low costs but with total security
      . To reach all the Internet users regardless of their type of Internet connection
      . To establish a direct business relationship with each Internet user

All three of those are necessary conditions to make the Internet the new medium for movies
